Emerging Leaders Northwest

Amy Sharer

My name is Amy Sharer, I have Cerebral Palsy and Non-Verbal Learning Disability. Like many people with disabilities, I "fell through the cracks" at K-12 school. This made me frustrated, but ultimately an advocate: I wanted to help students like me, capable of reaching as far as they wanted, held back by people who assumed a diagnosis was for people incapable of doing anything. As time went by, and I started my transition to college, I realized something else: many people with disabilities wouldn't see college because of the limited assistive services the K-12 system had to offer them that prevented them from reaching their full potential. With the help of OHSU, I decided that I wanted to be one of the people that changed that stereotypical cycle, and programs, like ELNW, is one of those efforts.
